UNIVERSE BIOS AES INSTALLATION, the PIGGYBACK METHOD ---------------------------------------------------- These instructions give a method of installing a UNIVERSE BIOS that is alot easier than installing a socket, soldering is still required though. To do this you will need the following before you start; - A Philips screwdriver. - A soldering iron and solder. - A 15K 1/4 watt carbon resistor. - A small piece of wire. NOTE. If you follow this installation method you will void your UNIVERSE BIOS upgrade option if you have one. You can also do permanent damage to your NeoGeo if you damage the PCB in any way. Only do this if you are confident you can do it correctly, remember I take no responcibility for damage caused to your AES by following these instructions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read through the following instructions a few times so you are sure you understand them before you start the process, - Remove the AES's protective casing (4 screws, 3 are located under the rubber raisers). - Locate the BIOS chip (it will either be above left or below right of the cart socket). The chip will normally have '531024' written somewhere on it. - Look at the chip carefully, you will notice a half circle cut into the side of it. Use that notch and the picture below to understand the numbering of the pins (pins 1 to 20 on bottom counting left to right, 21 to 40 on top counting right to left). 40 21 n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n n --------------------------------------- | | | | > | | | | | --------------------------------------- u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u u 01 20 - Carefully cut pin 2 of the BIOS already attached to the PCB as close to the board as possible and bend the pin out straight parallel with the PCB. Be careful not to damage the PCB in this process. - Bend Pin 2 of your UNIVERSE BIOS out also in the same manner, remember to have the chip the correct way around (notch on the left). - Place the UNIVERSE BIOS chip on top of the existing bios chip and make sure all pins are aligned correctly and overlapped. If done correctly pin 2 on both chips will be straight out and not touching each other. - Using your soldering iron go around and solder all 39 of the UNIVERSE BIOS to the 39 pins of the original BIOS. Do not use to much solder and make sure you don't join neighboring pins. - Take the resistor and solder one end to pin 2 of the original BIOS (the bottom one). Bend the resistor around and solder the other end to pin 40 of the stack (this pin is already soldered to the pin under it, just solder anywhere here to join it). - Use a small length of wire and solder one end to pin 2 of the UNIVERSE BIOS (the top one). Then solder the other end to pin 20 of the stack (this pin is already soldered to the pin under it, just solder anywhere here to join it). - In theory as long as you made no mistakes the installation is now complete. As a quick test you can power on the unit with no game inserted, if all is correct you will be presented with a blue screen. If there is a problem you will probably get some sort of screen with garbled flickering graphics. If this is the case then go through these instructions again double checking everything. - Reassemble the system.
